FAQs

Nineteenth-century furniture encompasses various revival movements, featuring dense hardwoods, functional storage solutions, and precise craftsmanship tailored for domestic and scientific utility.

Cabinet makers typically utilised solid hardwoods such as mahogany and oak, often incorporating secondary softwoods for internal framing, alongside handcrafted brass or turned wooden fittings.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate fixings, and natural oxidisation within the wood grain.

Pairing dark wood period furniture with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary textiles creates a balanced scheme that highlights the rich grain of the timber.

Maintain timber condition by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, applying traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the surface finish without sealing the wood.
