Can you overwind a manual watch?

Most mechanical movements have a natural stopping point. Forcing the crown past this physical resistance breaks the spring. Stop winding upon feeling firm tension.

I have an old watch that belonged to my grandfather and it runs fine for a few hours but then just stops working out of nowhere, is that normal for these?

That behaviour usually points to dried oils inside the movement. Mechanical calibres require specific synthetic lubricants to keep the gear train running smoothly. Over decades, these oils evaporate or turn into a sticky residue. The watch might tick while the mainspring has maximum tension, stopping as the power drops and friction takes over. A standard service to clean and re-oil the components normally resolves this issue.

What does a chronograph actually do?

A chronograph acts as a built-in stopwatch. It allows you to measure elapsed time independently of the main timekeeping hands. Pushers on the side of the case start, stop and reset the sweeping seconds hand. Small sub-dials then tally up the elapsed minutes and hours.

The dial on this old piece has gone quite brown and spotty over the years and I was wondering if it is possible to get it cleaned up so it looks white again?

Dial restorers can strip the original finish and reprint the markers. This process involves chemically removing the aged lacquer to reach bare metal before applying fresh paint and protective coatings. Many collectors prefer leaving the aged surface intact. Once a dial is repainted, the historical record of its natural ageing is erased.
