1920s Kays “Challenge” pocket watch.
The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement, by Revue, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold plated and it is in good condition, nice engine turned detail to the hinged case back.
The acrylic lens is in good condition.
The dial is signed Kay’s Keyless “Challenge”. William Kay set up Kays of Worcester in 1890. Customers bought items from handbills in a folder and initially the goods on offer were limited to household items, jewellery, clocks and watches such as this one. The goods were bought in and labelled with the Kays name. Eventually William’s son Jack took over the running of the business. The company continued to expand and trade successfully, becoming one of Worcester’s largest employers.
It is in lovely condition with original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.
