Antique 1920s Syren Pocket Watch and Chain

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique 1920s Syren pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a good quality Swiss 15-jewel stem-winding movement which is working well. The movement is signed Syren, a brand of the Record Watch Co. It is all protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold filled Moon model made by the Dennison Watch Case Company. The company manufactured cases for various watch makers. The case is in lovely condition.

The glass lens has a couple of small marks towards the top but otherwise is in good condition.

The white enamel dial is in lovely condition with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track.

The watch comes with a single chain, 23.5cm long including the clasp and the T-bar, which is stamped 18ct gold filled. Also included is a small brush (some of the bristles have worn down), which would have been used to clean a fob seal before sealing a letter with wax.

The watch and chain will come in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An open-face pocket watch from the 1920s features a clear glass crystal without a protective metal cover, allowing the dial to be viewed instantly. Timepieces from this era typically feature crisp Roman or Arabic numerals, a sub-seconds dial positioned at six oclock, and a keyless stem-winding mechanism.

Pocket watch cases were commonly made from solid gold, silver, gold plate, or rolled gold, housing a white enamel dial with blued steel hands. Accompanying watch chains, or Albert chains, were made from matching metals or brass and often included T-bars, swivel clasps, and decorative fobs.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate movement construction, hand-painted or printed enamel dials, and manufacturer hallmarks inside the case back. Mechanical movements from this period usually feature jewelled bearings and individual serial numbers engraved on the movement plates.

While traditionally worn in a waistcoat pocket attached via an Albert chain, antique pocket watches are frequently displayed on glass cloches or acrylic stands as desk timepieces, or worn as statement pendants on long necklace chains.

Mechanical pocket watches require careful handling and regular servicing by a professional horologist every three to five years to clean and lubricate the movement. Keep the timepiece away from moisture, strong magnetic fields, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
