Why are dressers listed as sideboards?

Because a dresser base does a sideboard's job. Take the plate rack off the top, or build one without a rack in the first place, and you have a waist-height serving and storage piece with drawers. Dealers list them either way. On Sellingantiques the titles run about three to one in favour of dresser over sideboard.

What is a pot board used for?

It's an open shelf at floor level, joining the front legs to the back, where pots and crocks were stood. Bases with a pot board tend to sit above plain cupboard bases in the range, and they show up repeatedly on George II and George III pieces.

Are these mostly Welsh?

Wales is the most insistent regional label, on well over a hundred titles, but English attributions are just as common overall. The county names that recur include Shropshire, Montgomeryshire, Glamorganshire, Anglesey, Cheshire, Lancashire, Westmorland, Yorkshire, Herefordshire and Devon. A named district generally lifts a piece.

The dated field runs from 1680 to 1940, so the working span is roughly the Restoration to the Second World War. Charles II and James II oak dressers sit at the early edge. The bulk carries 18th Century or Georgian labels, with a solid 20th-century tail tagged by decade through the 1920s and 1930s.

Do oak sideboards carry maker's names?

Rarely. Only one name clears three dealers across the whole archive, the London retailer Heals, whose 1920s and 1930s oak often turns up described as labelled. Everything else is anonymous country and trade cabinetmaking. Where a name appears at all, it's usually attributed rather than stamped.

A French long low sideboard, usually with several cupboard doors in a row. They sit in the smaller Continental group alongside buffets, often in bleached or limed oak. The longest in the archive runs to nine feet, which puts it near the top of the range on scale alone.
