This 18th-century Welsh oak dresser base demonstrates classic rustic farmhouse style through its open-base potboard form. The dark brown timber displays wonderful variation and intensity of colour and patina, accented by later brass swan-neck handles on the three top drawers. Shaped aprons grace the front, complementing the central baluster support column and the lower potboard shelf. Surface wear includes age-related marks to the top and front, alongside historic inactive woodworm evidence on the back legs and two added leveling blocks. Measuring 69 cm high, 196 cm wide, and 148 cm deep, this solid and sound antique surface is suited for traditional or country-styled interiors. It functions effectively as a decorative serving console in a dining room, a display table in a hallway, or a storage unit in a living space, providing practical surface area and open shelving for everyday items.

FAQs

A Welsh potboard dresser is a traditional piece of regional country furniture originating in Wales during the 18th century, featuring a row of drawers above an open lower shelf known as a potboard.

These dressers were primarily crafted from native British oak, utilising hand-cut dovetail joints, wooden peg construction, hand-planed boards, and solid drawer linings.

Authentic period examples display irregular hand-sawn timber marks, early brass or hand-forged iron hardware, wooden peg joinery, and surface patination consistent with centuries of use.

A low oak dresser base functions effectively as a hallway server, dining room sideboard, or entryway console table, providing lower display space on the potboard and storage within the drawers.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the piece is kept clear of direct heat sources and high humidity.
