Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Octagonal stamped brass backplates and drop handles: factory fittings of the period.
Geometric relief mouldings on the drawer fronts: machine work from the interwar years.
Quarter-sawn oak showing medullary rays: cut across the grain for decorative fleck.
Fitted green baize cutlery section: typical dining storage of the time.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

This 1930s English country house sideboard is made from oak in a warm brown colour with a waxed finish. The piece takes the form of a cabinet with two top drawers and a double-door lower cupboard, supported by block feet and a low stretcher base. A shapely low gallery back rises above the top surface. The upper drawer fronts display a carved floral frieze and metal drop handles, while matching metal hardware secures the cupboard doors. The cabinet has undergone a workshop repolish and light waxing, retaining sensible historic wear. Its overall dimensions measure 123 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 103 cm high to the upstand. Practical for everyday storage, this sideboard functions well in a dining room, kitchen, or hallway. The interior includes a removable shelf on one side to accommodate items of varying heights. The structure provides a traditional surface for display while keeping tableware, linens, or household items concealed within the cabinet and drawers.

During the 1930s, British furniture design frequently combined historical revival influences, such as Jacobean and Arts and Crafts styles, with simplified modern manufacturing processes.

Sideboards from this era were primarily constructed using solid oak frames and quarter-sawn oak panels, paired with cast iron or brass teardrop hardware and dovetail-jointed drawers.

Authentic pieces typically feature machine-cut dovetail joints, carved relief ornamentation along friezes, drop handles attached to metallic backplates, and original dark stain finishes with uniform patination.

Integrate warm wood tones into contemporary spaces by balancing the dark timber against neutral wall paint, hanging abstract artwork directly above, or decorating the top surface with minimal ceramics.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year while avoiding positioning the item near radiators to prevent timber shrinkage.
