Can I use a brass scuttle for ash?

Hot ash will damage the thin sheet brass over time. The metal conducts heat quickly, making the base dangerously hot to touch or leave on a rug. It is better to keep the brass for unburnt fuel. If you need an ash carrier, look for a heavy iron bucket instead.

We recently opened up our Victorian fireplace and found a space next to it, so what size scuttle should we be looking for to fill that gap beside the hearth?

Measure the footprint of the alcove before you start looking. Most helmet scuttles need plenty of floor space, plus room to swing the handle. Consider how much fuel you actually plan to burn. A large country house scuttle looks out of scale in a small terrace living room. You want a size that holds enough wood or coal for one evening without dominating the hearth space.

How do I clean japanned iron?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive metal polishes on japanned finishes, as they will cut straight through the antique varnish. A light coat of microcrystalline wax protects the surface. This stops moisture penetrating any areas where the japanning has chipped away over the years.

I have noticed that some of these have a separate metal bucket resting inside the main brass shell, were they always made like that or is it a later addition?

Better antique scuttles were sold with those removable tin liners from the start. They protected the expensive brass or copper outer shell from the impact of heavy coal. Servants would carry the liner down to the cellar to refill it, leaving the decorative shell in the drawing room. Finding one with its original liner still intact is a bonus.
