How do I make modern mattresses fit old beds?

We live in a narrow terraced house with tight stairs and I am worried a massive wooden headboard simply won't go round the corners, do they come apart at all?

If your stairs have a sharp turn and a low ceiling, you need to measure the diagonal clearance carefully. Metal beds are often easier to move. Long side rails often sag under modern weights. They were originally designed to hold feather mattresses rather than heavy pocket-sprung equivalents. You can fix this by adding a central support beam. Cut a piece of timber to run from the headboard to the footboard, resting on the floor with a couple of block legs. Rest your slatted base on this new central beam as well as the side rails. It takes the pressure off the antique joints without altering the original wood.
