This French king size bed frame dates from 1880 in the Louis XVI style and is constructed from mahogany and fruitwood with brass mounts. The warm brown timber displays diamond and chequered geometric parquetry inlay, quarter veneer detailing, and brass regency style moulding and quadrant brass beading along the edges. The arched headboard and footboard feature fluted and tapered corner posts adorned with brass Corinthian column shaped capitals and brass ormolu floral garlands, raised on turned brass castor feet. The clean and restored frame measures 151.5 cm high, 166 cm wide, and 216 cm deep, and accommodates a UK modern king size mattress. Positioned as a central sleeping piece in a main bedroom or guest suite, the bed suits period or traditional interior schemes. The solid and sturdy construction provides a comfortable foundation for daily rest while adding architectural presence to the room through its detailed parquetry and classical metalwork. The design allows it to coordinate easily with wooden bedside tables, wardrobes, and traditional bedroom decor.

FAQs

Louis XVI style furniture is characterised by Neoclassical restraint, featuring straight lines, geometric symmetry, fluted columns, and refined decorative wood inlays known as parquetry.

Cabinetmakers traditionally construct these pieces using dense hardwoods such as mahogany for the primary framework, using contrasting fruitwoods like plum, pear, or kingwood to create intricate geometric veneers.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut veneer alignment, solid timber substrate construction, cast bronze or brass mounts, and original rail attachment ironwork.

Balance the rich tone and detailed pattern of the timber by dressing the bed with crisp, neutral linen bedding and pairing it with minimalist lighting or modern bedside tables.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or radiators to prevent veneer lifted from environmental drying.
