Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This king-sized bedstead dates from 1900 in the French Empire style, constructed from golden-brown bird's-eye maple veneer with gilt gesso mounts and dark timber accents. The curved headboard displays classical ornamentation, while the low footboard exhibits a prominent natural grain pattern above a Greek key inlay border. Flanking the footboard are turned column posts standing on round bulbous feet with gilt accents, accompanied by side rails converted to hold a standard UK king-sized mattress. In a contemporary home, this bed serves as a central focal point in a master bedroom or guest suite, pairing easily with traditional or period interiors. The warm finish and figured timber bring texture to the sleeping space, providing a practical sleeping platform with significant decorative presence. The headboard reaches 122 cm in height, the footboard stands at 93 cm, and the frame measures 169 cm across its widest point.

FAQs

Empire style bedsteads emerged in the early nineteenth century, featuring Neoclassical architectural influences, symmetrical silhouettes, and gilt bronze or brass embellishments inspired by ancient Greek and Roman designs.

Period bedsteads were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with figurative veneers like satinwood or burr maple, and fitted with gilt-metal mounts or hand-carved details.

Authentic period pieces demonstrate hand-carved joinery, original iron or timber rail fittings, hand-applied gold leaf or cast metal mounts showing natural surface oxidisation, and uneven wear consistent with age.

Balance the visual weight of an antique bedstead by pairing it with crisp white linen, subtle neutral wall shades, and minimal modern lighting to allow the timber grain and gilt accents to remain the focal point.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid placing the timber near direct heat sources or damp walls, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood finish.
