Size: 5ft 6in x 4ft 5in (168 x 135cm).

Antique Turkish Komurcu Kula rug of traditional desiign.

Circa 1900.

These scarce rugs are known as Komurcu rugs; this means coal or black, they are given the name due to the black / charcoal coloured back ground. This example is very well drawn with a pleasing light blue used in the corners, the border is of a traditional linked floral design.

The condition is excellent with only slight wear and good pile, excellent wool quality. The rug is of a useful almost square size.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

Komurcu Kula rugs originate from the Kula region in western Anatolia, Turkey, a renowned centre for rug weaving since the Ottoman period. The term Komurcu translates to charcoal burner, reflecting the distinctive dark, rich colour palettes, particularly deep browns, dark blues, and rich reds, that characterize these hand-knotted textiles.

Traditional Kula rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundation. The wool was coloured using natural plant and mineral dyes, giving the yarns subtle tonal variations known as abrash.
