Antique Persian tribal Qashqai kilim, South West Persia.

Circa 1890.

A really outstanding Qashqai kilim with very bold diamond lattice design and wonderful natural dye colours throughout including a scarce green.

Outstanding original condition, very slight wear, both ends retain the original checkerboard end finishes and long plaited tassels. A really outstanding example of tribal weaving.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

Qashqai kilims are handwoven flatweave textiles created by nomadic Qashqai tribes in southwestern Iran. Characterised by bold geometric patterns, vivid vegetable dyes, and slit-weave tapestry construction, these carpets served functional and decorative purposes within tribal tents.

These kilims are hand-spun entirely from wool yarns on portable looms, using a slit-weave tapestry technique where horizontal weft threads tightly pack over vertical warp threads. Natural dye sources, such as madder root, indigo, and walnut husks, produce the rich colour palette.

Authentic nineteenth-century Qashqai pieces display fine hand-spun wool warps and wefts, asymmetrical geometric motifs, natural abrash colour variations, and braided or tasselled fringe ends. Machine-made reproductions lack the irregular texture and hand-bound selvages typical of nomadic weaving.

A tribal kilim adds rich colour, texture, and historical interest when layered over neutral hardwood floors or paired with mid-century modern, bohemian, or minimalist furniture. They can also be displayed as decorative wall hangings or draped over seating.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush attachment to prevent pulling the woven fibres, and rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear and light exposure. Professional spot-cleaning with pH-neutral wool detergents is recommended for spillages.
