Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This pair of 19th-century French Rococo Revival chenets takes the form of fireplace accessories crafted from bronze with a dark brown patinated finish. Each figural sculpture rests on an elaborate base decorated with rocaille scrollwork and acanthus leaves, depicting a couple seated atop the framework with the male figure playing a flute. The cast metal shows deep contouring throughout the openwork scrolls and figurative robes, positioned symmetrically to face one another. Each chenet measures 30 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Placed directly onto a fireplace hearth in a reception room or study, these decorative items bring period character to an active hearth or serve as standalone mantel ornaments when the fireplace is not in use. The substantial dark bronze construction withstands standard hearth environments while complementing traditional or French Chateau interior schemes.

Chenets, also known as firedogs or andirons, are decorative metal supports placed at the front of a fireplace hearth to contain burning logs or ornament the firebox opening.

19th-century chenets were typically cast from bronze, brass, or iron, frequently featuring hand-chased surface details, dark patination, or gilded finishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp casting with hand-chiselled or chased details, substantial weight, and natural oxidisation or patina within the deeply recessed scrollwork.

Chenets can be placed inside non-working fireplaces, set on a hearth surround, or displayed as decorative metal sculpture within a traditional or eclectic interior.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical solvents that could damage the original patina.
