Cast Fire Back with Grate and Fender. Very Solid.

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

This fire grate has the well detailed back with a date of 1679. Displaying the word 'pax' which we suggest was to express a relief that Charles II had returned from France and was now back on the throne. The Cromwellian control was behind and people were looking forward to a time of peace.

The actual bars have been replaced and are in great condition and these sit on a pair cast fire dogs. Also included is a cast fender with good detail. This on its own could easily command a price of £150 to £200. The whole, very solid, ensemble is for sale for only £460, The keenest price we can see for the sale

of this type of example especially as a fender is alos included.

As for sizes, the ones below are for the fender the others are here. The back is 60cms wide and 72high. The grate is 64 wide and 35 deep. The dogs take the width to 84cms overall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cast iron firebacks originated in the 15th century to protect rear chimney brickwork from intense heat damage while reflecting radiant thermal energy back into the room.

These items were manufactured by pressing wooden patterns into sand beds to create moulds, into which molten iron was poured to form dense, heavy castings capable of withstanding extreme temperatures.

Authentic pieces feature distinct sand-casting texture, subtle surface irregularities, natural iron oxidisation, and substantial physical weight characteristic of traditional foundry techniques.

A complete fireback, grate, and fender assembly creates a grounding architectural focal point within an inglenook fireplace, open chimney breast, or decorative hearth alcove.

Maintain cast iron by applying black grate polish or iron paste with a soft brush to prevent corrosion, avoiding water contact which promotes rust formation.
