This fire grate has the well detailed back with a date of 1679. Displaying the word ''pax'' which we suggest was to express a relief that Charles II had returned from France and was now back on the throne. The Cromwellian control was behind and people were looking forward to a time of peace.
The actual bars have been replaced and are in great condition and these sit on a pair cast fire dogs. Also included is a cast fender with good detail. This on its own could easily command a price of £150 to £200. The whole, very solid, ensemble is for sale for only £460, The keenest price we can see for the sale
of this type of example especially as a fender is alos included.
As for sizes, the ones below are for the fender the others are here. The back is 60cms wide and 72high. The grate is 64 wide and 35 deep. The dogs take the width to 84cms overall.
