FAQs

A Carlton House desk is a specific type of writing table featuring a curved superstructure of small drawers and compartments enclosing three sides of the writing surface. The form originated in the late 18th century, famously designed for Carlton House, the London residence of the Prince Regent.

These desks are traditionally constructed from solid timber frames such as mahogany or satinwood, veneered and embellished with intricate marquetry or floral inlay. They typically feature hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass gallery rails, dovetail jointed drawers, and cast-brass handles.

Authentic period pieces exhibit period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage appropriate to the nineteenth century, and traditional shellac polish finishes. Examining the secondary woods, hand-forged screws, and the precision of the marquetry inlay also helps verify age.

Pairing this sophisticated antique with contemporary seating creates a striking juxtaposition of eras in a study or home office. Keeping surrounding decor minimal allows the complex wood grain and intricate brass details to serve as the focal point of the room.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels and keep the wooden surface away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking or veneer lifting. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the timber and leather insert with professional-grade conservator wax.
