An Ensi is a specialised tribal rug woven by Turkmen groups, traditionally hung over the wooden lattice doorway inside a nomadic yurt rather than placed on the floor.

These rugs are traditionally constructed from hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, warp, and weft, utilising rich natural dyes derived from madder root to achieve the characteristic deep red and terracotta tones.

Authenticity is evaluated through structural features such as symmetrical Turkish knots, natural colour variations, wool quality, handle flexibility, and the presence of the characteristic four-part cruciform field layout.

An antique tribal rug functions effectively as a focal point in neutral spaces, layered over larger sisal flooring, or wall-mounted as a textile artwork to introduce geometric pattern and warmth.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye degradation, and professional hand-washing by a specialist conservator.
