Blue and white transferware production began in England during the late 18th century, utilising copper plate engraving techniques to transfer complex pictorial designs onto earthenware bodies before glazing and firing.

These items were typically manufactured using refined earthenware or creamware, decorated with cobalt blue metallic oxide pigments transferred from engraved copper plates onto the ceramic surface.

Authenticity is determined by examining crazing in the glaze, manufacturing spur marks on the base, depth of the blue print, and specific makers marks or patterns stamped into the ceramic paste.

Antique plates are frequently displayed grouped on walls using plate hangers, arranged on dressers, or utilised as functional centrepieces on dining tables to introduce historical pattern and depth.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent when necessary, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and abrasive sponges to protect the fragile glaze and historic surface.
