Description

The quality of design and manufacture, of this pair of marble-topped French walnut bedside cabinets, is unmistakable. Their flowing naturalistic Art Nouveau style particularly appeals. The use of gilt metal mounts in the form of seed pods cleverly interspersed within the delicate carved wooden foliate decoration lifts them above many other bedside cabinets from this period. Our mention of Louis Majorelle is just a little nod to the great designer, as his influence is very apparent - the numbers and letters clearly seen on side of the right-hand drawer are somewhat of a mystery, possibly a stamp indicating their ownership. The original marble tops, with their patchwork of veins and the myriad of delicate colours that crisscross them, have been restored, rather than replaced because they were originally chosen with great care and consideration. The draw and door handles, which are all original, are also very much in keeping with the period and the overall feel of the cabinets. The marble linings to the cupboard interiors are in good condition. The cabinets have been professionally restored - their warm attractive surface colour has been sensitively retained. A lovely pair of bedside cabinets that will continue to give pleasure for many years to come.

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. FAQs

Art Nouveau was an international design movement that peaked between 1890 and 1910, characterised by organic motifs, flowing asymmetrical lines inspired by natural forms, and fine craftsmanship.

These pieces typically utilise high-quality hardwoods such as walnut and mahogany, often featuring hand-carved floral panels, dovetail joinery, marble tops, and cast brass or bronze hardware.

Authentic pieces are identified by characteristic whiplash lines, hand-carved botanical motifs like floral and leaf patterns, original period hardware, and traditional construction techniques consistent with turn-of-the-century European workshops.

They can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing them with minimalist surroundings to allow the intricate wood carving to stand out as a statement piece, creating a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preserve the finish by keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply a quality microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
