Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this piece to the 1890s.
It is indeed very nicely woven with fine wool and natural dyes. The classic design has the nice variation of not having a central medallion. Although there is plenty of variation and complexity in the shrubs, there also appears to be an order to the design. Is there a cosmic message there? Who knows, but this is a very elegant and decorative rug which would work in many settings. It has survived the generations in excellent condition, and has recently been professionally cleaned.
