FAQs

Japanese cloisonne enamel, known locally as shippo-yaki, is an art form where fine metal wires are applied to a metal base to create intricate patterns. The resulting compartments, or cloison, are filled with coloured enamel paste and fired repeatedly before being polished to a smooth finish.

These pieces were typically crafted using a base of copper or brass. Craftsmen soldered delicate brass or silver wires onto the surface to define detailed motifs, after which multiple layers of glass-based vitreous enamel were applied, fired in kilns, and ground flat with abrasive stones.

Authentic Meiji period cloisonne features extremely precise wirework, dark or vibrant opaque enamels, and seamless polishing without visible pitting. Works from this era frequently depict botanical subjects, birds, or geometric patterns with high technical execution.

Position decorative cloisonne plates on acrylic or brass display stands on a sideboard, shelf, or mantelpiece to allow light to highlight the enamel work. Alternatively, mounted plate hangers can be used to integrate them into a curated gallery wall.
