Description

Late Regency pair cast iron boot scrapers; rare surviving pair; the curved scrape blade raised on opposing griffin monopodia having open beaks and feathered wings with pierced scrolls and scalloped shells below. Raised on claw feet standing on rectangular dished trays with two drainage holes. An almost identical single boot scraper sold Christies 20/06/2013 for £2750.

During the Regency period in the early 19th century, urban paving was minimal, making mud clean-up essential before entering residential properties. Foundries began mass-producing decorative cast iron boot scrapers featuring neoclassical motifs, mythical creatures, and integrated drip trays to protect indoor flooring.

These items were produced by pouring molten iron into sand moulds, creating dense, heavy castings capable of withstanding heavy daily outdoor use. Many designs featured a central horizontal scraping blade flanked by sculpted side uprights and set into a shallow dish base.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle hand-finishing marks, seam lines from two-part sand moulds, and natural surface oxidisation or built-up layers of historic paint.
