Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a French form of writing table featuring a flat surface, typically lined with leather, and a row of shallow drawers within the frieze. Originating in the 17th century, it was designed to stand in the centre of a room rather than against a wall.

19th-century French bureau plats were commonly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, kingwood, or rosewood, ornamented with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts. Writing tops were frequently inset with tooling-patterned leather and bordered by brass galleries.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, heavy chased gilt-bronze mounts, and period-appropriate lock plates. Maker stamps or signatures from noted cabinetmakers, such as Henry Dasson, may appear stamped into the timber framework.

A bureau plat serves effectively as a freestanding focal desk in a home office or library, displaying its finished back profile. Pairing the piece with contemporary seating or architectural lighting provides a structured balance between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly along the wood grain. Keep the table positioned away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid timber shrinkage or leather deterioration.
