Early 19th Century Mahogany Tray-topped Desk

This finely made English tray-topped mahogany desk dates to the early part of the 19th Century - when I came upon this piece for the first time, its understated quality was obvious, however, it was the mahogany's appealing grain and subtle colouring that really drew my attention, plus the fact that there is more legroom than normal, which will definitely suit taller clients. It is constructed from well-chosen solid mahogany and retains its original turned wooden knobs, escutcheons and all but one of its original locks - the one that was missing has been replaced with a similar lock from the same period (all locks have been serviced and keys cut). This desk sits directly on the floor, so there are no worries about excessive wear to wooden floors by metal castors. Tray top refers to the gallery that surrounds three sides of the desk's top - this, like the lining to each of the drawers, has been constructed with fine hand-cut dovetail joints. As you can see from the images, this desk has the added benefit of a beautifully made vanity panel that sits to the rear of the kneehole. This desk is constructed in one piece - however, being nicely proportioned it will pass through a standard doorway easily. Now, after some sensitive restoration, this desk is ready to embark on its 3rd Century of use.
