FAQs

A Davenport desk is a compact form of writing desk that first appeared in the late 18th century, named after a Captain Davenport who commissioned a similar design. By the Victorian era, they became immensely popular as ladies writing desks featuring a sloping top and side drawers.

These desks are traditionally constructed from high-grade timbers such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring decorative veneers like figured walnut. Construction methods include dovetail joints on the drawers, turned or carved wooden supports, and inset leather writing surfaces.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional wood shrinkage, original brass hardware or castors, and the patina of the timber. Makers marks, stamps, or labels inside the drawers can also provide historical verification.

An antique Davenport desk works well as a focal point in a home study, living room, or bedroom. Pairing it with a modern or mid-century chair creates an eclectic contrast, while positioning it against a neutral wall highlights its intricate wood grain.

To preserve antique walnut, keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply high-quality beeswax periodically to nourish the finish.
