Antique Karaja Runner

1900 - 1920
Description

A vivid and extremely colourful antique Karaja runner which uses designs you would see in Caucasian rugs woven in Azerbaijan.  Chemical dyes were introduced around 1880 and often can be found in rugs from this region, and this runner has used these bright and bold early dyes.  Woven with a very unusual grey tone background.

This antique runner has actually been signed by the weaver and woven with the date, it seems to work out in the islamic calendar to be 1922 which would definitely align with with the bright dyes.  So exactly 100 years old this year!

Condition is very good, a great soft wool pile all over, the runner is tribal so it doesn't sit completely straight, but with our underlay it could be manipulated to straighten out some more.  A very interesting piece and available now.

Use our request home visit service to try any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire and the rest of the UK by appointment.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja rugs are hand-knotted tribal textiles woven in Northwest Persia near the Heriz region. They are characterized by repeating medallion schemes, often alternating between geometric latch-hook motifs and central star-shaped figures.

These rugs are crafted with a hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, using natural vegetable dyes to achieve saturated hues of terracotta, indigo, and cream.

Authentic pieces exhibit single-weft construction, a slightly ribbed texture on the back, and characteristic geometric medallion motifs alternating along the field, accompanied by stylized animal or floral details.

A traditional Persian runner provides colour and structural interest in entryways, long corridors, or alongside kitchen islands, pairing seamlessly with natural timber flooring and neutral architectural palettes.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating beater bar, rotate periodically to ensure even wear, and use a high-quality rug underlay to protect the foundation from friction.
