Early Antique Karaja Runner

19th century
Description

This is an incredible Antique Karaja runner, simply outstanding! Woven around 1870-1880 the colours are mouthwatering, such a great mixture and the design has been executed so well.

A wonderful short antique runner, that excites and honestly one of the best we have had from this region.  This particular Karaja runner draws many influences with Caucasian weavings using bold geometric motifs that would be used in many rugs from the Caucasus.  Antique rugs are all about character and this piece has it in abundance.  It would brighten up any hall or corridor and is in good condition and extremely durable.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja rugs originate from the Northwest region of Persia near Heriz, and are characterised by geometric designs featuring distinct latch-hook and stepped medallions arranged along a narrow format suitable for corridors.

These textiles are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton or wool foundation, coloured with natural dyes including madder red, indigo blue, and ivory.

Authentic pieces feature a repeating sequence of distinct geometric medallionstypically alternating between square or octagonal shapes and hooked star motifsalong with a firm hand-knotted weave and bound wool edges.

A geometric wool runner provides visual alignment and grounding in entryways or corridors, offering textural contrast alongside clean-lined contemporary furniture or natural timber flooring.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush, rotate the piece periodically to promote even wear, place a quality non-slip underlay beneath, and utilise specialist rug cleaners for stain treatment.
