Description

Description:

Antique English pewter charger of 18 3/16 inch diameter with cast and incised rim, there would appear to be a single cast rim with two incised lines inside of this. The surface of the bowl and rim is hammered all over as was typical of items made for export especially to Sweden. There is a set of rubbed hallmarks to the rim, the fourth hall mark contains the makers initials. To the rear of the rim are two touchmarks, the word 'London' can be made out along with a 'rose and crown'. The back rim also has some ownership initials scratched and punch engraved to include 'BJM', 'NB' and 'MT'.

Condition:

The plate is in fair condition with a polished finish to the front, with traces of oxide in some of the hammer marks. The reverse is also lightly polished with some light oxide.

Repairs: There are numerous old repairs especially on the revers where the rim joins the booge.

Size: 18.187 inch diameter (46.20cm). The rim width is 2.750 inch (6.80cm) 29.50%.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pewter charger is a large, flat circular platter used historically both as display metalware on dressers and to support smaller dining plates during formal service.

Seventeenth-century pewter chargers were cast in stone or brass moulds, after which the well and booge were extensive hand-hammered to compact the alloy, enhance structural rigidity, and smooth the surface finish.

Authentic pieces from the Restoration period (circa 16601685) typically feature broad rims with incised concentric line decoration, hand-hammered surface textures, touchmarks on the rim or reverse, and heavy lead-tin alloy compositions.

Large metalware chargers are typically styled propped vertically on a sideboard top, mounted onto a wall surface within a plate arrangement, or set centrally along a mantelpiece.

Preserve historical pewter by dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip natural oxide patina or damage soft tin-based surfaces.
