Nineteenth-century bronze sculpture was heavily influenced by the Classical revival and academic realism, with French foundries leading production using the lost-wax casting method or sand casting to create highly detailed figurative works.

These pieces are typically composed of copper-alloy bronze, often featuring a hand-applied chemical patina ranging from dark brown to green, mounted upon marble or slate bases, and cast in sections before being chased and assembled.

Authentic items feature age-related patina wear, foundry marks or artist signatures stamped into the metal, crisp chiselling known as chasing, and hollow interiors characteristic of period sand or lost-wax casting.

Placing a patinated bronze figure on a polished wooden surface, sideboard, or mantelpiece adds classical gravitas, tactile contrast, and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Maintain antique bronze by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding all chemical cleaners or abrasives that might strip the historic patina, and keeping the piece in a stable environment away from excess moisture.
