This nineteenth-century Grand Tour sculpture depicts Narcissus cast in patinated bronze with a dark brown finish. The figure stands in a classical contrapposto pose on a moulded circular base, wearing laced sandals and an animal skin draped over his shoulder. The statuette exhibits a dark, reflective surface that accentuates the contours of the body and the intricate detailing of the footwear and drapery. Alongside the central sculpture, the surrounding tabletop arrangement displays a miniature chest of drawers with decorative floral inlay, a carved wooden column with a twisted spiral shaft, and a rectangular box with small brass handles. Standing 40 cm high, the statue is well-suited for display on a mantelpiece or atop a desk within a gentleman's library or study.

A Grand Tour Narcissus bronze is a 19th-century scaled replica of the classical statue unearthed at Pompeii in 1862. Traditionally acquired by British travellers completing their European Grand Tour, these statues depict the youth in a classical pose wearing laced sandals.

These figures were cast in solid bronze using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method. After casting, metalworkers applied chemical patination, resulting in dark brown, black, or deep green tonal finishes.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-chased details, natural casting seam wear, and historic patination rather than modern painted coatings. They usually possess solid weight and typical 19th-century base proportions.

Classical bronzes integrate into contemporary schemes when placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, serving as an architectural focal point alongside modern artwork or structured foliage.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush. To protect the patination, apply a thin layer of neutral microcrystalline wax occasionally and buff gently, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
