Dutch Delftware originated in the city of Delft in the Netherlands during the 17th century as a European earthenware response to imported Chinese blue and white porcelain.

Delftware is traditionally made from buff-coloured earthenware clay covered in an opaque white tin glaze, which is then hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments before firing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine crazing in the glaze, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, minor edge chipping known as fritting, and period-appropriate maker marks on the underside.

Antique ceramic plates can be mounted on walls as focal artwork using plate hangers or displayed upright within traditional plate racks and open shelving units.

Antique earthenware requires gentle hand washing with mild soap when necessary, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and abrupt temperature changes to protect the fragile tin glaze.
