Large Regency Print of a Family with Birds

19th century
Description

A very unusual and decorative late Regency print of a family feeding birds in an aviary. The print has been laid onto a canvas and varnished. The varnish has discoloured over time to a pleasing deep sepia colour with a great patina. The subject matter is most unusual with the family all in profile standing behind the birdcage as the viewer looks through. The whole has an almost surrealist look about it and is both naive and almost folk art looking. I have never seen this particular subject done in this way before. The work is in overall good condition but there has been the odd minor blemishes and tears, this might be why it was at some point been laid down on a canvas to strengthen it. The work is mounted in a Victorian period frame and I would think it has been in this frame from that time. The frame is very good quality and in good condition. The whole is the most unusual image with a great, unique, quirky, decorative appeal. C.1830.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency era prints, dating from the early nineteenth century, frequently feature neoclassical themes, domestic family portraiture, and natural history studies. These works were predominantly created using copperplate engraving, aquatint, or early lithographic techniques.

Frames from this period were typically constructed from pine or oak backing, coated with layers of gesso, and finished with gold leaf gilding. Ornamentation was achieved using pressed composition or hand-carved details.

Authentic period prints exhibit characteristics such as impression lines from copper plates, natural age-related toning, and foxing on the paper. Original frames display signs of age including oxidisation of the gold leaf, slight cracking in the gesso, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

Large framed artwork can serve as a focal point above a console table or sideboard in modern or traditional settings. Combining classical gilt-framed art with contemporary furniture provides contrast within gallery walls or modern living spaces.

Paper artwork should be displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and damp damage. Dust the gilt frame gently with a dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleansers that can dissolve gesso and gold leaf.
