Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. It is characterised by its distinctive colour palette, featuring underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red and enamel detailing.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to create dense porcelain. The decoration is applied in stages, combining initial underglaze blue brushwork with subsequent firings for overglaze enamels and occasional gilding.

Authentic 19th-century Imari pieces display hand-painted variations in enamel thickness, asymmetry in brushstrokes, spur marks on the base from kiln supports, and age-appropriate wear to the unglazed foot rim.

Imari plates can be mounted as wall art in a grouped arrangement, displayed on plate stands within dark wood bookcases, or used as decorative accent pieces on top of sideboards and consoles.
