This Victorian apothecary pestle and mortar is made from heavy cast brass with a warm gold colour and a polished finish. The mortar features a flared rim, a pedestal base, and incised turned rings encircling the body, while the matching solid brass pestle displays horizontal rings and a knapped end. The mortar stands 9 cm high and 8 cm across, and the pestle measures 17 cm in length and 3 cm wide at the base end, with a combined weight of 1.4kg. In a contemporary home, this piece sits well on a bookshelf within a gentleman's library or study as a decorative object. The surface shows light reflections and subtle tooling marks from its construction and use. It serves as a striking display item that reflects nineteenth-century pharmacy equipment.

FAQs

During the Victorian era, brass pestles and mortars were widely utilized by apothecaries, chemists, and households to pulverize dry botanicals, chemicals, and culinary spices into fine powders or pastes.

Victorian mortars were typically sand-cast from solid brass or bronze, then hand-finished on a lathe to create decorative concentric ring turnings and smooth interior surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy weight relative to their size, lathe marks from hand-turning, subtle casting imperfections, period maker stamps, and natural surface patination in unpolished crevices.

Display this object as a tactile accent on a wooden bookshelf, office desk, or kitchen sideboard alongside leather-bound books, vintage glassware, or natural botanical specimens.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip natural patination; apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax to protect against oxidisation.
