Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian pedestal desk is made from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and stands on a solid plinth base. The rectangular top has a green leather writing surface with hand-applied gilt and blind tooling, bordered by a raised wooden moulding. The twin pedestal structure contains nine graduated drawers arranged with four drawers on each pedestal column and a central drawer above the kneehole. Each drawer is fitted with a turned wooden knob and a keyhole escutcheon. The desk measures 76 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 71 cm deep, with the entire piece constructed as a single unit. It serves as a practical workspace in a home study, library, or traditional office setting, providing ample storage capacity across the pedestal drawers while offering a durable writing surface for daily tasks.

FAQs

A Victorian pedestal desk typically consists of a flat writing top set over two freestanding pedestals equipped with drawers. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, these desks feature solid proportions, rich dark woods, and inset leather writing surfaces.

These desks were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. Writing surfaces were commonly lined with gold-tooled leather, while drawer knobs were typically turned from matching timber or cast in brass.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass locks, and turned wooden or brass hardware. The pedestals often separate from the desktop into three distinct sections for transport.

A pedestal desk serves as a functional focal point in a dedicated home office or library. Pairing the rich timber tones with modern lighting and understated seating creates a balanced, eclectic workspace.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the wood grain. Keep the leather writing surface clean using a mild leather balm and avoid direct exposure to sunlight or radiators to prevent drying.
