Blue and white Staffordshire pottery originated in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Staffordshire potters developed underglaze transfer printing on earthenware to mass-produce detailed decorative tableware featuring British landscapes, romantic scenes, and floral motifs using cobalt blue pigment.

Transferware platters were crafted from earthenware or pearlware. Copperplate engravings were inked with mineral pigments, printed onto thin tissue paper, and transferred onto unglazed ceramic items before being fired with a clear protective lead glaze.
