Antique Heriz Runner

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely deep red antique Heriz runner from the early 20th century, with exquisite pale blues and a flowing all over design.  This elegant antique runner from the North-West of Persia, has been woven around 100 years ago and is full of character and wonderful charm.

Heriz is a nomadic weaving region in Persia which is famous for weaving varying designs usually consisting of geometric motifs, stylised floral patterns and often bold repeating medallions.  This runner is more curvilinear in its pattern with flowing vines and smaller floral designs, rather than abstract geometric star medallions, which they generally used.

Condition is very good indeed, with a medium high wool pile all over, minimal lower areas of pile, but no threadbare areas.  Heriz are also famous for being sturdy, decorative weavings, this piece is no exception.  Supplied with our anti-slip underlay suitable for wood, tiled or sisal floorings.

Heriz and Karaja are not far from the Azerbaijan Border so they draw influences from many Caucasian rugs and runners. They are easily recognisable with repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif is often the latch-hooked design motif or an eight-pointed star.  The village weavings of Karaja such as this runner often use a simpler repeating medallion design with a great array of colour.  Heriz often deployed this abstract all over design, with vines and geometric flowers.  They dyes are also what make these tribal antique runners so desirable, as well as their durability.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Heriz rugs originate from northwestern Iran and are distinguished by bold, geometric interpretations of floral motifs and durable construction. Runners from this weaving district feature elongated repeating central medallions enclosed by decorative multi-tiered borders.

Traditional Heriz carpets are hand-knotted using local wool pile over a cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool is dyed using plant and mineral extracts, such as madder root for reds and indigo for deep blues.

Authentic hand-knotted pieces feature asymmetrical knots with subtle variations in weave density and dye shades, known as abrash. The reverse side reveals hand-spun yarn texture with knot patterns identical to the pile surface.

A Heriz runner provides structure and visual length when placed in entryways, narrow corridors, or galley kitchens. Modern schemes benefit from contrasting the angular crimson and navy patterns against timber floorboards or polished concrete.

Vacuum regularly without using a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling the wool fibres. Blot liquid spills immediately using clean water and an un-dyed cloth, and utilize specialist professional carpet cleaning for deep washing.
