This large Chinese bronze vase dates from the 19th century in the Qing Dynasty style, rendered in a dark brown patina. The heavy vessel stands 33 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep, supported on a stepped pedestal foot and finished with a flared rim. Two stylized figural handles curve gracefully from the neck to the rounded body, which is embellished with detailed relief carvings of birds amidst botanical motifs. Additional decorative mouldings circle the neck and base, complemented by subtle wear on the metallic surface. Positioned on a sideboard top, this piece brings historical character to a gentleman's library or study. The solid construction and intricate casting display traditional workmanship suitable for display as a standalone decorative object or holding dried arrangements. The dark bronze tone integrates easily with traditional interior schemes, adding sculptural presence and texture to a room.

FAQs

Late Qing dynasty bronze vases often draw inspiration from archaic ritual vessel shapes, incorporating detailed relief casting of flora, birds, and traditional geometric motifs along with decorative handles.

These items were typically created using lost-wax casting or sand casting techniques, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details and the application of a patinated surface finish.

Authentic period pieces demonstrate natural patina, hand-finished carving marks, appropriate age-related oxidisation in recessed areas, and substantial weight consistent with solid bronze casting.

Position the vessel on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table as a standalone sculptural centrepiece, balancing modern minimalist backgrounds with rich, textured antique metalwork.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth, and avoid moisture or harsh chemical cleaners which can damage the original patination and oxidisation layers.
