FAQs

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow set of drawers traditionally featuring a locking side pilaster that secures all the drawers at once. Originating in the early 19th century, the style is popularly named after the first Duke of Wellington.

These chests are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, turned wooden knobs, and a locking mechanism housed within one of the fluted or plain side pilasters.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage appropriate to age, traditional secondary woods inside the drawers, and original brass or steel locking mechanisms with functional keys.

This piece can be placed upon a desk, sideboard, or console table to serve as a functional storage element for small items, introducing rich timber grain and historical character into a modern space.

Preserve the timber by maintaining stable ambient room humidity, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading of the rosewood grain, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished surface.
