This antique Italian decorative jardiniere serves as a planter, platter, or fruit serving bowl, originating from the late Victorian period around 1900. Rendered in cast bronze, the object exhibits a dark brown colour with mellow golden tones across its weathered surface and a desirable aged patina. The crown-shaped bowl features a scrolled rim sitting prominently over a concave bowed form, adorned with acanthus foliage, rococo scrollwork, and cast relief foliate wreathes. Four charming putti figure legs support the vessel, each sculpted with arms held up to carry the bowl. Measuring 19 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 30.5 cm deep, the piece possesses substantial presence. Designed in the Renaissance Revival style, the jardiniere functions as a striking table centrepiece for a dining table or as an ornamental statement piece placed in an entrance hall. The detailed putti figures and intricate relief decoration provide visual interest from every angle, making it an engaging focal point for interior display. Maintenance requires only occasional dusting to preserve the bronze finish, keeping the historic character intact for modern homes.

FAQs

A jardiniere is an ornamental vessel or planter designed to display foliage or serve as a decorative table centrepiece, widely produced during the 19th century across Europe.

These decorative metalworks were typically created using lost-wax or sand casting methods, allowing for detailed sculptural supports, relief scrollwork, and classical figural elements.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patina gathering in recessed areas, hand-finished chasing around original casting seams, and substantial weight consistent with solid cast metal.

Place the vessel on a dining table or sideboard, styled either as a standalone sculptural accent or filled with dried floral arrangements.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a light coat of microcrystalline wax to guard against humidity and oxidisation.
