This Victorian stick barometer dates from around 1700 and displays warm brown walnut veneers applied to an oak carcase. The architectural carved hood has a curved pediment supported by turned columns, framing twin silvered register plates, a central vertical glass tube, and a turned wooden cistern cover at the base. The woodwork exhibits rich natural grain patterns alongside subtle historical surface wear, with silvered metal components and exposed glass. Measuring 97 cm high, this narrow instrument suits placement on a tight wall space in a gentleman's library, hallway, or study. It functions as both a decorative wall hanging and a traditional weather-measuring device, bringing understated period character to practical interiors.

Keep the instrument strictly upright to avoid mercury spillage, position it away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber from splitting, and maintain the casing with microcrystalline wax.

A wall-mounted stick barometer functions effectively as a structural accent when installed in a narrow hallway, library alcove, or integrated within a gallery wall of framed botanical prints.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-engraved lettering on silvered or ivory scales, original blown-glass tubes, period-appropriate timber oxidisation, and hand-carved decorative elements on the wooden casing.

Traditional stick barometers are constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, housing a central glass tube filled with mercury alongside silvered brass or ivory register plates.

The stick barometer was developed in the late seventeenth century following Evangelista Torricellis invention of the mercury barometer, becoming a standard domestic weather-forecasting instrument throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
