Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Authentic Meiji bronzes display precise relief work, substantial visual and physical weight, and natural age-related patination, often visible in crevices. Look for signatures or artisan marks on the underside or base panels, along with characteristic motifs like dragon handles and avian iconography.

An antique bronze vase works well as a sculptural focal point on a mantlepiece, console table, or shelf. Pair dark patinated bronze with lighter natural materials such as oak or marble to create visual contrast in contemporary or traditional interior spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate relief work. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these strip the historic patina; a thin coat of microcrystalline wax applied occasionally helps maintain the original surface finish.

These pieces were typically cast using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by hand-chasing and engraving to refine the surface relief details. Dark patinas were chemically applied to create rich, varied surface tones and protect the metal underneath.

The Meiji period (18681912) marked a golden age for Japanese metalworking, following the decline of samurai sword production. Metalworkers transitioned their techniques to decorative arts, creating bronze items featuring detailed casting, high relief decoration, and naturalistic motifs such as flora, birds, and mythological creatures.
