Description

Silk rugs are among the most coveted of the Persian arts. The craftsmanship required to weave these beautiful items was known by only a handful of master weavers, and were only woven in a few locations in the 19th century. Tabriz, in North-West Persia, was one of those centres. This is a really beautiful and refined prayer rug. It has a wonderful texture that shimmers under light. The palate is exquisite, especially the plain gold field which as been enhanced by the sparing use of a ruby red which gives the whole rug a jewel-like feel. Prayer rugs were occasionally made in silk for important clients, but they were usually highly cherished and rarely used. This piece has hence survived in very good condition. Note again the wonderful border and the cartouche above the niche. A wonderful example of this Persian art form which would work equally well as a wall hanging or as a decorative floor rug in a very special space.
