This rosewood bonheur du jour dates from circa 1880 in the Louis XVI Revival style. The piece is constructed from warm brown timber with quarter veneer detail, complemented by brass gallery railings along the top edges, metal mounts, and slender tapered legs terminating in small square sabots. The upper section incorporates an arched central mirror flanked by two banks of small drawers, alongside a pull-forward writing section with a baize-covered slide, pen tray, inkwell, and sander, plus a glass-topped display drawer and lower drawers fitted with small round metal pulls. The rectangular writing surface sits atop a frieze containing three small drawers. Practical proportions measure 123 cm high, 81.5 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, with a clearance height of 62 cm beneath the frieze. Suitable for placement in a study, bedroom, or living room, the desk provides a functional writing station with integrated storage compartments and display surfaces for daily use in a modern interior.

A bonheur du jour is a small type of French writing desk introduced in Paris during the 1760s, featuring a raised superstructure containing small drawers, shelves, or cabinets above a flat writing surface.

These desks were typically constructed using fine hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, enhanced with parquetry or marquetry veneers, polished brass gallery rails, and cast brass mounts.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast brass or bronze mounts with hand-chased details, original veneer patination, and straight, tapered, or fluted legs characteristic of classical French revival design.

A bonheur du jour functions well as a decorative writing vanity in a bedroom, an entry hall accent piece, or a compact workstation within a contemporary living room setting.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners on the brass fittings.
