Antique Turkish Antep Rug of Very Scarce Design, South East Anatolia Circa 1870.

19th century
Description

Size: 6ft 11in x 4ft 0in (210 x 122cm).

Antique South Eastern Anatolian Antep rug of scarce design.

Circa 1870.

This is a outstanding example of this scarce design, the design has many similarities to that found in Caucasian Karachoph Kazak rugs; with the four corner boxes containing stars. The rug has a soft brown ground that is corroded so that the design in other colours stands proud in a sculpted effect. The ivory ground border is of simple form often associated with earlier rugs.

The rug is offered in showroom condition having been professionally restored in Turkey, the sides and ends have been re-woven and there are areas of repair in the field.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

Stock Number: H-330.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antep rugs originate from South East Anatolia and are characterised by geometric motifs, stepped central medallions, and a rich colour palette traditionally featuring terracotta reds, deep blues, and earthy brown tones.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the warp and weft structure, coloured using natural dyes derived from local plants and minerals.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural dye variations known as abrash, slight irregularities in the hand-spun yarn knotting, a soft wool pile, and geometric iconography specific to regional Anatolian weaving traditions.

A Turkish rug serves as an anchoring floor covering in contemporary spaces, pairing effectively with minimal wooden furniture, neutral colour schemes, and textured linen upholstery to add warmth and depth.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only attachment without a rotate brush bar, rotate periodically to ensure balanced wear, and blot spills immediately with a clean, damp cloth without rubbing.
