This mid-19th century Austrian silver bowl basket dates from 1860 within the Rococo Revival style. The piece presents an oval form made of silver in a polished silver colour finish, displaying intricate pierced openwork, acanthus leaf scrollwork, foliate borders, and twin scroll handles with floral and foliage ornaments alongside a central cartouche with a figural or floral finial. Visible marks appear on the central surface. The object measures 35.5 cm wide by 21 cm deep. Display this decorative silver basket on a dining table center for formal dining arrangements or serveware presentations. Alternatively, place the bowl upon a side table, sideboard, or display cabinet within a living room, hallway, or dining space to hold small ornamental items or enhance period interior styling.

FAQs

During the mid-19th century, silver production in Vienna, known as Alt Wien, favoured Rococo Revival styles characterised by intricate scrollwork, pierced openwork, and elaborate foliate motifs used for formal dining display.

These items were crafted from solid silver alloys, shaped through casting, chasing, and hand-piercing to form openwork scroll patterns before being assembled with integrated handles or bases.

Authentic pieces carry official Austro-Hungarian hallmark stamps, including the city town mark, date mark, and silver purity standard mark stamped directly into the metal.

Position the piece at the centre of a dining table or sideboard, allowing the detailed metalwork to contrast against natural wood or stone surfaces.

Dust regularly using a dry cloth and clean lightly with specialized silver polish to clear oxidisation from recessed areas while preserving the surrounding patina.
