Description

The Shekarlu are a subtribe of the famous Qashqai Confederation that have lived in South Persia for centuries. Shekarlu rugs are easily identified by the sawtooth leaves and latch hook palmettes seen in the field, and the polygons in the border. However, it is rare to find one in this size. It has excellent wool quality and is well drawn. The dyes are all natural and have a wonderful patina to them. The overall condition is very good, although there are some old repairs which have faded. This is one of those rare rugs which is both highly decorative and collectible at the same time. Professionally cleaned.

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Persian Rug to the 19th Century.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional organic washing when necessary, and keeping the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading.

Layering an antique rug over neutral flooring adds texture and global character, grounding contemporary minimalist furniture with historical depth and warmth.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the irregularity of hand-knotted foundations, natural variations in vegetable dyes, material patina, and traditional regional motifs characteristic of specific tribal weaving groups.

Authentic pieces are traditionally crafted from handspun wool for the pile and foundation, often utilising natural plant and mineral dyes to achieve rich, enduring colour palettes.

Antique Persian rugs originate from various tribes and urban centres across Iran, with weaving traditions dating back centuries that reflect the cultural heritage and storytelling motifs of nomadic and village artisans.
