Rare Antique Bidjar Rug

19th century
Description

Woven in a Kurdish town in West Persia - Bidjar rugs are famous for weaving tough carpets and rugs in varying designs.  This rare antique Bidjar rug uses the stunning Mina-Khani floral design, with an unusual background colour of varying brown tones, a real rustic and ancient look to this tribal rug from Bidjar.  The pale blues, pink/red tones and greens are all natural dyes and have faded beautifully over the last 140 years.

One end has been professionally and expertly rewoven, as this is a rare design and early rug, it was worth saving this rug and having the damaged end fully restored.  The three minor borders at the bottom end of the rug have been re-woven using antique wool and to the untrained eye would you struggle to see it has been done.  Please view all the images which show the back and end of the rug and the restoration. The rest of this rug is in excellent order and has a nice wool pile, some corrosion to the darker brown dyes due to the iron properties in this colour.

Visit our barn showroom soon to see this rug up close and over a 1000 more.  We hold one of the largest collections of antique rugs and contemporary carpets in the UK.

Or by selecting a home visit we shall bring this antique rug for you to view in situ, along with more rugs if you select alternatives to view from our inventory too.

This Persian tribal rug originates from 1870 and follows a traditional Persian tribal style. Made from wool and cotton, the rectangular wool rug displays a camel-brown ground colour with pale blues, pinks, red tones, and greens, along with corrosion to the darker brown dyes from iron properties. The central field is decorated with a dark blue geometric floral lattice motif, a Mina-Khani floral design, and a geometric diamond grid, finished with a multi-band border pattern that includes three minor borders at the bottom end. One end has a professional re-weave using antique wool to restore previous damage. The piece measures 203 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Suitable for an English Country House aesthetic, the rug works well placed upon living room floors or hallway spaces to bring a rustic and ancient character to interior schemes. The natural dyes have faded over time, complemented by a nice wool pile in excellent order across the rest of the surface. It provides a practical and decorative floor covering for daily domestic use.

Bidjar rugs originate from the town of Bijar in northwestern Iran, historically woven by Kurdish craftspeople. They are distinguished by their robust construction, earning them the historical title of the iron rugs of Persia.

These rugs are hand-knotted using local wool for the pile, typically tied with symmetrical Turkish knots onto a heavy cotton or wool foundation. Dual wet-weft pounding techniques compress the threads, creating an unusually dense and stiff structure.

Authentic antique Bidjar carpets exhibit extreme weight and rigidity, making them difficult to fold. They feature natural vegetable dyes with subtle colour variations, a short dense pile, and traditional motifs such as floral lattices, palmettes, or central medallions.

An antique rug can be placed on light neutral hardwood flooring to anchor modern, minimalist furniture arrangements. The rich earthy tones and geometric patterns provide grounding contrast against contemporary neutral walls and clean-lined architectural elements.

Vacuum the rug regularly without a rotating beater bar to prevent fibre damage, and rotate it annually to ensure balanced exposure to light and foot traffic. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and periodic cleaning should be performed by a specialist rug conservator.
