Description

Karabagh is a famous district in the Armenian Caucasus which has a rich tradition of carpet weaving. Occupied by the Persians for centuries, and then later in the 19th century by Russia, the carpets woven in Karabagh reveal the different influences upon the weavers from local wealthy clientele, as well as their indigenous weaving traditions . This carpet is one of a well known group of Karabagh carpets that may have first appeared in the 18th century or earlier. It is a stunningly beautiful carpet with repeating blossoms within a lattice design floating on a white background and framed by an elegant meandering vine border. The carpet has been reduced in size but retains it's splendour! Thin and fine, it folds like paper. A carpet for the connoisseur!

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Preservation involves regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialist cleaning when necessary, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight to protect the natural wool fibres and dyes.

An antique rug can be used as a grounding element in a modern living space or hallway, pairing its rich texture and historical pattern with clean-lined contemporary furniture to create visual balance.

Authentic pieces feature organic irregularities in the weave and pattern, traditional symmetrical or asymmetrical knots, natural dye variations, and authentic wear patterns consistent with age and hand-use.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using handspun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often utilizing natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects to achieve rich, lasting colours.

A Karabagh kellei is a traditional long-format carpet woven in the Karabagh region of the Caucasus during the 19th century, known for its distinctive blend of regional tribal designs and European floral influences.
