FAQs

Victorian painting encompasses a wide range of academic, romantic, and realist movements, frequently focusing on narrative scenes, landscapes, and maritime subjects with dramatic use of light.

Works from this period typically utilise oil paint applied to stretched linen canvas, housed within heavily carved and gilded composition or wooden frames featuring intricate floral and scroll motifs.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas ageing, stretcher bar construction, artist signatures, pigment composition under magnification, and checking the age and joinery of the gilt frame.

Such pieces serve as focal points in traditional or eclectic rooms, often mounted against dark or neutral walls to highlight the luminous qualities of the canvas and the texture of the ornate gold frame.

Paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity, with occasional professional cleaning by a conservator to remove surface dust and stabilise the varnish.
